We are picking some friends up at the airpot in guadalajara and driving back to Leon Gto and were wondering if any one knows a nice place to stop in Tlaquepaque for a nice afternoon meal and some shopping?

Independencia is the main shopping street in Tlaquepaque and is not open to cars. As you enter Tlaquepaque you make a right on Juarez where there is parking and turn left off Juarez (one way traffic on Juarez) and walk one block to Independencia. One of my favorite restaurants is Casa Fuerte on Independencia. There are also a lot of great shops on Juarez.

I had one of my best meals in Tlaquepaque a couple weeks ago at Real San Pedro on Independencia. I had lasagna made with huitlacoche.

Whole heartedly second, and endorse the Restaurant Real de San Pedro recommendation. Mexican amigos residing in Zapopan suggested, and met us to dine at the Real San Pedro shortly after it had opened 18-20 months ago, and we've returned without hesitation numerous times to eat whenever we are in Tlaquepaque. It is by far consistently better then any of the other suggestions posted and offered up to this point. I am certain you will not be disappointed!

Here's the web link to the TripAdvisor comments/reviews for Real San Pedro = Http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g659617-d1817170-Reviews-Real_San_Pedro-Tlaquepaque_Guadalajara_Metropolitan_Area_Pacific_Coast.html

Buen provecho!

I'll have to try Real de San Pedro. I've not eaten there, but if it is better than either Casa Furete with their

wonderful service (and a second for their Tamarindo Margaritas) or Adobe, with their outstanding menu, I'll be a very happy man indeed.

El Pescador Rojas, for the best seafood in Jalisco. Drive along Juárez till you get to El Parián. At that corner, turn left and go to the next block. Turn right. Just past the corner (on the right side of the street) is a public parking lot; park there. Walk back toward the corner. Two doors toward the corner is the restaurant. It's not much frequented by tourists, but the food is marvelous and the service is excellent.

Must tries:

Empanadas de camarón

Coctel de camarón

Huachinango entero dorado, the best I have ever eaten:

If you go on a Sunday, be prepared to wait; fortunately, there is a waiting area at the raw bar.

Where I ate before was that central plaza with a gazebo in it called El Parian I think. It was pretty damn expensive, so perhaps that plaza is just for tourists?

El Parián is a collection of restaurants all around the central plaza. I think there are as many as 18 restaurants, each one mediocre at best. The folkloric dancing and singing are also usually mediocre. Definitely for unknowing tourists.

I second Adobe (Fondo) on Independencia, same block as El patio.

As an unknowning tourist I am not even being sarcastic I appreciate this thread. I am going to check out these other restaurants off the beaten path both to save money and to get some more flavor.

Is it Adobe that has the Mexican/Italian fusion? If so, it is spectacular!

El Patio was our choice until about 2 months ago, a group of us went there, all of us had been there before several times and it wasn't "terrible" but it was hardly acceptable and no where near it's former standard.

The next time around we tried a place on Juarez that sits way back in a long hallway, nice place, soso food and they tacked on a 15% gratuity (illegal in Jalisco) and we paid it plus and the waiter had the gall to return and lay the open empty folio on the table "for our propina" - you can guess how much that got him plus it's off any future lists.

I have a home in Tlaquepaque. There are two places I woud highly recommend: one is around the corner from El Parian on Reforma between Progreso and Matamoreos: it is the restaurant at Quinta Don Jose, Reforma 140. It's a B&B with an awesome chef and great music on the weekends.

The second place is Nahual on Juarez a block east of the Parian on the right side of the street. An incredible menu, great cuisine. Doesn't have the service and ambiance of Quinta Don Jose, but the food choices are awesome.
