cedros
They have replaced the 50 centavo coin (gold colored with an almost serrated edge) with a coin that looks very similar to the 20 centavo coin-round and silver. Maybe this is old news but I just discovered it today at Superlake when I accused them of short changing me.

johanson
I had no idea that there was a new 50 centavo coin. Thanks for sharing the information with us.
bournemouth
It's not new, just very similar to the 20 centavo coin. The 50 centavo is thicker and marginally larger. If Wikipedia is right, it was introduced in 2009.
Natasha
It's been around for years --- can't confirm or deny 2009. And yes, it's a PITA because old eyes can't see the numbers!
More Liana
The sizes of the coins aren't different enough to distinguish without it being a PITA. The outside edges of the 50 and 20 centavo coins are different from one another, I suppose for the sake of the visually impaired. One can learn the difference by feel. 50 centavo reeded edge: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces18097.html 20 centavo alternating reeded and plain edge: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces18096.html And yes, both introduced in 2009. Cedros, the old coins are not at all similar to the new ones except in denomination.
cedros
Definitely the new 50 centavos that I have is almost identical to the old 20 centavos. Maybe you are looking at different coins.

S. Mint has done it more than once in recent years with their various dollar coins.
