Gerry
Can anyone suggest the best route to take from Brownsville, Texas and recommend a place to stay enough route?
Jreboll
Could you be more specific? Crossing at Brownsville you could go down the coast to Cd Victoria and then cross over to San Luis Potosí. Or you could cross over at Pharr, Reynosa, or Anzalduas to Monterrey then San Luis Potosi
NLU
Many years ago (1975), I lived in Harlingen. Many friends crossed at Brownsville on their way to Monterey. I always went to Nuevo Progreso. The Brownsville crossing wasn't as hectic then as it is now, but, it was far from quick. https://www.google.com/search?pws=0&gl=us&q=nuevo+progreso+border+crossing&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiXp7K2u93bAhVOKawKHeVVD7gQ1QIIxAEoBA&biw=1280&bih=
Jreboll
There’s about eight bridges from Matamoros to the other side of Reynosa. However, the Matamoros to Reynosa road should be avoided if possible. So use the bridge closest to the road south that you’re going to take
AngusMactavish
The route becomes obvious when one does it as often as I have. https://www.google.com.mx/maps/dir/Brownsville,+TX,+USA/Chapala,+Jalisco/@20.6178229,-103.1396765,8.61z/data=!4m24!4m23!1m15!1m1!1s0x866f7f6bc3fc6519:0xb1df1a694856522c!2m2!1d-97.4974838!2d25.9017472!3m4!1m2!1d-97.4819696!2d25.8605595!3s0x866f94d8069af853:0xffa85a8ff43cc9fc!3m4!1m2!1d-101.9412406!2d21.3438697!3s0x842bd3d1f105454b:0xf25d82f05a93364a!1m5!1m1!1s0x842f40b1771f4cb7:0x73c1721b67d87f53!2m2!1d-103.1846016!2d20.3051576!3e0?hl=en Stop in Nueva Villa de Padilla, Tamaulipas to buy oranges. There will be if in season, sellers on both sides of the road. Hotel El Dorado, Tula, Tamaulipas is a great secure side of the road hotel that is less than 500 pesos and pet-friendly. It is about halfway and with the first half being so scenic, you can slowly enjoy the new road through the mountains. You will see sellers holding up baggies on the sides of the road. They are selling freshly picked chilis pequines and chiltepins. Just south of Tula is an olive orchard that only cold presses one time at night its olives. Its output is labeled in English and is export only. They do have it available at the factory and if you want great gifts, get a case. http://www.olivomx.com/olivomx-ingles.html Do not be tempted to bypass Lagos De Moreno. Go through town. Wife's family(and her) would never let us go on 101either.
