Seguro Popular

When the now outgoing President of Mexico invited foreigners here on a legal basis, to join Seguro Popular, he did so in Spanish. When a senior official addressed a large crowd at LCS, she invited everyone to participate, she did so in Spanish. I could see the great majority of people didn't understand a word she said, no one laughed at her jokes. I felt sorry for her, and made a point of meeting her after the event to thank her for coming. While the majority of medical professionals in Seguro Popular are bi-lingual, or close to it, the front line workers only speak Spanish. If you are really serious about this, hire a translator to decode the document, I can gaurantee google translate will produce gibberish. You could hire that same person to accompany you to Seguro Popular, while you learn basic Spanish.

yes better learn Spanish if you are going to use Seguro Popular.. It is for Mexicans with little money, everyone is welcome but do not expect service or to find medecine when you need it. I often accompany my indigenous friends to the seguro popular here is Chiapa..they go to a private doctor when they can gather the money.. and I sure would do the same. Last year I took a young woman who could not breath and was in pain to the local SP place, we walked out , they did not have medicine or a doctor so we went to the next town.. There the doctor checked her out and asked her a few time in a range of 1 to 10 how was the pain.. she said 10 every time, The doctor said you are lying and I cannot do anything for you go and see a specialist in San Cristobal..She went to a witch doctor..the next day she was still in pain went to see a private doctor and she was sent to have her gallbladder removed the following day she was sent home..no thanks .

If your going to sign up for Seguro Popular you will need to learn how to converse in Spanish. Or hire a translator to speak for you...

Those are real helpful replies to the OP's question.  How about the older people here who are ineligible for private insurance or IMSS because of pre-existing conditions or/and can't afford the high premiums.  That leaves SP.  It wouldn't hurt to provide the information requested, would it?

Of course it would be a good thing to know Spanish, but becoming fluent is too much of a challenge for some older people.

Thank you gringal and alanmexicali for being responsive and helpful to the OP. I have SP and my Spanish is very much a work in progress but I am able to get medical care with the help of Google translate, a Spanish-English dictionary and the kindness and forbearance of medical staff. It is not always easy but it is significantly better than having no insurance.

I wanted to mention once again, that many public hospitals, and some private doctors, accept Seguro Popular insurance. The Occidental in Guadalajara has over 300 beds, and 30 specialties, and is praised highly by many doctors who I trust (with my life). It has a lot of equipment, but does not have a CATH lab. Maybe the huge Seguro Centro hospital has one - I don't know. At one time, it was the busiest hospital in Latin America, treating 1,000 patients a day. When ETN became President, he dumped millions into this hospital. The Seguro doctors (through the social workers) can arrange greatly reduced prices to outside specialties or tests not covered by their insurance. The system is always in a state of change, only for the better I can forsee, they have now enrolled over 5 million users. I think (opinion alert) they invited foreigners who have proven to be great financial donors, for things like the children's burn unit, and also often leave legacy gifts. The foreigner volunteers often support and organise fundraisers too.  No one donates to IMSS or private hospitals - ever.

There is no copay. SP pays 100% of the services it provides. Some medicines or services you might need to get privately and you might need to pay. The younger doctors at SP speak English or try to.  Coverage should be for 3 years from the date you signed up.

I spoke with a doctor today and asked him. He smiled and said there are no hospitals that accept them as Seguro Popular has no money to fund it.

SP does not pay for 100% of their services. An operation on my shoulder is $8577 plus a charge for the arthroscope and some meds.

SP pays 100% of the services IT PROVIDES. Patients must pay to rent some equipment like laparoscopic equipment. I paid about $4000 pesos for the laparoscopic equipment which was better than having old fashioned surgery and taking weeks to heal. I also paid for some tests outside of SP. Again, it pays 100% of what SP provides without a deduction. Some medicines and procedures are not provided and the patient pays out of pocket.

There is a well known Dra in Joco who accepts SP so I have to assume it is paying her. I am sure others accept as well but I haven't asked. It is IMSS that is hurting for money and will likely be incorporated into SP in the future. Why assume that a private doctor knows about SP?

Who else would know better? I have SP, as my only option, and am not trying to disparage it.

IMSS and Seguro Popular will not be merged. IMSS had some money problems with paying the IMSS pensions but the federal govenment bailed them out a few years ago. They opened a state of the art full service hospital in Nogales, MX..

Mexico City (EL UNIVERSAL) .- President Enrique Peña Nieto will inaugurate the General Hospital of Nogales, Sonora, of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) this coming Monday.

They are building 9 state of the art hospitals this year.

I wouldn´t say they are financially strapped and have gone under reoganization for about 5 years.

Read  AlanMexicali's post. He is the expert in all things relating to Seguro Popular and IMSS. Whatever we think will always be incorrect. Private doctors in the area accept SP and SP will pay some private clinics to help out with the medical bill. SP is busy and taking more members.

In the section "healthcare overview" that is direct from a MX doctor.

The knee surgery is from a woman who many years ago was married to the brother of the Shah of Iran.
