Horses?

I saw an unusual sight today at the Chapala Rastra -Municipal slaughterhouse. A horse was tied up in the pens. Usually farmers go to Rastra to get the meat inspected before it is stamped and approved for human consumption. But I read that it is illegal to consume horse meat in Mexico, but they have a strong export trade. Lets hope it was just a worker who rode his horse to work.

Mexican horse meat a gourmet product

Abattoirs slaughtered 128,000 horses last year, mostly for export of the meat

At least some horse meat also ends up on dinner plates in Mexico although in most cases its consumption might occur unwittingly.

A study conducted by the National Autonomous University and published last week found that almost 10% of beef samples taken from meat markets in five cities turned out to be horse meat."

Here is another interesting look at the topic of eating horses.

Years ago in California there was a ballot measure to allow the production of horse meat for human consumption. We wondered how it got on the ballot, a sudden upsurge of horse meat lovers? Nope, it seems that 65,000 pregnant horses were used every year in the production of Premarin, a hormone replacement drug. What to do with the used up mares and foals....
