Jump starting with a newer car

The other day my road was blocked by a delivery truck stuck parked diagonally across the road. I drove around the block to give the driver a jump start. It didn't work with out some fiddling. The truck driver said it was because my vehicle was newer (2014 Nissan) and had a computer. He said you need to be carefull jump starting when your car has a computer. Is that true?

Courtesy of Mr. Google:

  1. Take out your jumper cables.

It’s a good idea to buy a set of jumper cables and keep them in the trunk compartment. If you don’t have jumper cables, you have to find a good Samaritan who not only is willing to assist you but who has jumper cables as well.

  2. Place both vehicles in Park or Neutral and shut off the ignition in both cars.

Engage both parking brakes as well.

  3. Attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal of your battery.

It has “POS” or “+” on it, or it’s bigger than the negative terminal.

  4. Attach the other red clip to the positive terminal of the other car.

  5. Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other battery.

  6. Attach the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your car that isn’t near the battery.

Use one of the metal struts that holds the hood open.

The cables should look like this.

To jump start a car, you'll need to make sure you connect the jumper cables in the proper order.

If you have unpainted metal surfaces on your car, there's more problems than a dead battery.  BTW, that metal strut either has a plastic grommet where it swivels from the frame or it contacts with a painted surface.  I go with Mr. Google on most everything, but this advice is faulty.

The only unpainted metal I can thing of would be the engine block, but it attaches to the car with rubber mounts.

A mistake will result in a massive repair bill...be very careful!

My battery was dead this morning. So I called the garage and they came and jump started it and then I went to Escalera to get it checked out. They sent me to Auto Zone. to get a new battery. All three said if you have a computer in your car you can't do the regular jump start. They use a special battery to jump it. While Auto Zone took out my old battery and put in a new one they had this special battery plugged into my cigarette lighter so that my computer would not lose it's memory.

I can see plugging that into the cig lighter (if there even is one these days), but the rest? Hooey, except for I think some makes of Honda...? And truly, my car has been dead with no battery and no backup in the cig lighter, and no problem... I just reset my radio, etc. It does not affect your car's basic calculations. If it did, there would be cars all over the road and lots and lots of lawsuits.

I wonder why they would hooey me. Both Auto Zone and Escalera had these special battery backpacks that said something about computer on it.

With respect if you break the continuity on latter model cars you will screw up your computor..so what model car do you drive?

Most of the answers are given here are BS..  He couldn't boost the truck because his CAR battery was to small to boost a TRUCK.

You can change the battery in a new car without plugging in an external power supply, but  if you leave the battery disconnected for to long you risk losing some of the settings in the computers.. So if you have an external power supply available it's best to use it just in case...

From googling;

"When you connect jumper cables from a running vehicle to a dead battery, the alternator in the running vehicle instantly puts out maximum charging voltage. That can create a voltage spike of up to 15.5 volts in both vehicles. And it's that voltage spike that can fry computers and digital devices."

What to do? More reading required.

OK, I have to throw this in about jump starting vehicles.

First you need a good quality jumper cable set. Most of the sets you purchase are just 10 gauge wire with a heavy outer coating. These cables wont handle much amperage. If you are trying to jump start a vehicle with these you will need to let the vehicle run for awhile to put some sort of charge in the dead battery. The larger the load the more amps it is going to take to turn over the starter.

When purchasing a set of jumper cables pull back the insulated rubber grip and look at the wire, if it is the size of a soda straw it is about 10 gauge, ok  for light stuff but on a totally dead battery you will still have to let the running vehicle charge the dead battery some.

Urban legend.  Just connect the batteries and start the car!

All I know is that my owners manual in my newer car, warns me about the dangers of starting another car from my car battery. They say NEVER DO IT. Yet, when I was gone, my neighbor took my car to his garage and jump started his older car without my permission. I was mad because of the warning I had read in my owners manual, not because he used my car.

They just took the jumper cables from battery to battery. And nothing went wrong.

So I do not know what to believe. But just in case the warning is sometimes true, I shall not share my car again for the purpose of jump starting another car.

There is not an issue boosting another vehicle with a newer vehicle ... If it's done correctly .. But if you do it incorrectly such as reverse polarity, or short the battery out you could do a lot of damage..  So you won't let anyone boost your new vehicle ?     Because the same issues would apply....

And after driving your vehicle a certain amount of time ( varies by vehicle ) all your cars data will reset and be as good as new. Resetting radio settings could be your biggest challenge. Any time you disconnect a battery this happens.
