blankletmusic
Are these fairly common or do most only accept cards with the magnetic stripe?
AngusMactavish
I see the chipped cards used everywhere. In a few stores, I see them swipe the card on the cash register and then place it in another for the chip reading.
Ezzie
Yes, most of the larger chain stores have chip readers now. NOB issued credit cards (Visa/MasterCard) work fine - Amex not so much.
Floradude
I have two (Mexican) debit cards with chips and have never had a problem anywhere except once in Argentina.
Frijoles
We are increasingly having problems with ATMs and our chip debit card from a small Canadian bank (ATB). At this point, Banamex, Bancomer and Scotiabank will not process it, so we're using HSBC. BanBajio processed it but they only allow 6,000 or 7,000 pesos per withdrawal and we want to take out the 15,000 allowed by HSBC to save on service charges. Inbursa would allow only 3,000 pesos per withdrawal.
sugarplumfaerie
I use Santander in Chapala with a chipped card from the U.S. Not a problem. Santander allows you to put in your own amount for withdrawal but I don't know if there is a limit.

Do you mean you have had issues with the Am Ex cards not working properly in the machines or they are not as widely accepted as Visa/ MCard? Ezzie
Amex cards not as widely accepted as Visa and Mastercard cards. You may want to check with a few merchants first before buying anything from them.
