A busy commercial truck crossing on the Mexico-United States border was closed yesterday after a severe storm brought strong winds and heavy rain, flipping tractor-trailers on their sides and causing damage to the World Trade Bridge in Nuevo Laredo.

The governments of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Laredo reported that damage from the storm, initially thought to be a tornado, was considerable, knocking down communications antennas and leaving many areas without electricity.

The storm struck about 8:30pm and knocked out power to Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, Valle Hermoso and Matamoros, among other locations, delivering gusts of wind of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

At the border crossing, signs and trees were blown over and Mexican Customs facilities sustained severe damages.

The bridge, which carries more than 12,000 cargo vehicles a day between Nuevo Laredo and Laredo, Texas, remained closed this morning until further notice.

The bridge that was affected is the World Trade Bridge.... a commercial bridge between Colombia and Bridge II downtown. Both of them appear to be open, electricity not withstanding.

Both Laredo Lincoln-Juárez (Bridge II)  and Colombia Solidarity (Bridge III) are open for business as usual for both commercial and private vehicles. Bridge 4, the World Trade, is truck traffic only. As of mid-morning today, there was no backup at either Bridge II or III, a rarity for any Monday morning.

Not knowing the exact layout of the Colombia crossing.... commercial vs private..... I wonder how/if this heavy truck traffic (probably diverted from World Trade) might be afffecting 'throughput' of private traffic at that crossing. I.e does 'everyone' turn off Hiway 2 'together' and might that cause a bottleneck if all the trucks start going that way?

The website showing 'Wait Times' shows, at 8PM Wednesday 24, almost no wait times anywhere. It is showing that 5 lanes, of 18, are open at the World Trade Commercial crossing... 7 of 8 commercial lanes open at Colombia with 10-minute wait.
