roxelle44
I noticed some chewing has been done under the hood of my car and wondered if anyone knows of a good deterrent for critters, especially those gathering nesting materials. I heard that moth balls might help but have not seen them. Thanks
red river valley
Moth balls are good for stopping the chewing, did see them at WalMart not long ago..........also ask Pancho at Super Lake.
RVGRINGO
Hardware stores and auto parts stores usually have moth balls (naftalena). Just ask.
hensley
The $store at the Ajijic Plaza usually has them.

Earl
If you use moth balls, the smell will permeate your car and you and your clothing will smell like moth balls wherever you go! Besides, it's not healthy to breathe in insecticides.
maxx
Put vegetable oil on the wires and hot pepper powder on them.
lcscats
I leave the hood open and let the six cats keep critters away. Been storing cars for three years with no chewing but you do have to live with six cats laugh out loud.
Pogo
Ammonia - pure ammonia, not laundry detergent with ammonia - in a pan with a sponge in it and placed under the engine compartment or IN the engine compartment will keep just about anything out of that engine compartment. Two things, however: you must refill the pan periodically and you may have to remove the pan before driving the car. Walmart and SuperLake usually have ammonia in the laundry section. snowyco
Our NOB professional pest control guy agrees with Pogo: ammonia. Squirrels & raccoons often ignore moth balls. The pan of ammonia could work, but with messy consequences if you or some other driver forgets it.Instead you could soak rags with ammonia, or tennis balls, or other things that are absorbent and easy to handle. or put the pan of ammonia on the ground under the motor? I've used it on rags to keep raccoons and squirrels from returning to our attic and from returning to the eaves of our previous home. Not all stinky things have the same risks to our health: Note that ammonia vapors are only an irritant, while the advice to use Naphthalene - moth balls - is a mistake - as Naphthalene creates reasonable cancer risks. suegarn
I agree with maxx, the best thing is to mix up some vegetable or olive oil with ground-up hot peppers. Brush the mixture on your wires. One taste and the critters will be running for the hills!
jrm30655
I have some little hot peppers that grow wild in my flowers. Little tiny things, hotter than heck. Wear gloves!!!! Put some olive oil in a blender with the peppers, grind, strain with cheesecloth and put in a sprayer. They will stop anything. Watch your eyes when spraying. Getting the residue out of the blender is a pain. Hot water, dish detergent and run the blender a couple of times.
sm1mex
We use moth balls in 2 zip lock bags with ice pick holes in them. Put them on the sides against the fire wall where it does not get hot. Works like a charm. You might smell them the first couple of days but it goes away quickly.
