New Hotel Planned

Recommended Posts

Mexican real estate and investment firm Sun-Star Group, has announced the development of an internationally branded luxury hotel at Lake Chapala, a popular destination located within 50 kilometers of Guadalajara Mexico’s second largest city, and home to a large population of expatriates.

The Sun-Star Group, led by Mr. Eduardo Hernández Rodríguez and Mr. Thomas Wahl, has an agreement with an international hotel brand, for the development and operation of a luxury hotel at Lake Chapala, with an option for additional territories.

“We have examined the Mexican hotel market very carefully and it is no secret that the industry is at a point where many opportunities are emerging to serve both the domestic and international markets for leisure and business travellers”, said Thomas Wahl.

“We have identified key locations, acquired real estate and are working in conjunction with a premier international hotel company, allowing us to develop the appropriate hotels ranging from three star to luxury, depending on the market”.

The group selected Ajijic at Mexico’s Lake Chapala for its first development, because of the unique demographic make up of the market.

“We chose Ajijic as our first project for strategic reasons. The destination currently has no internationally branded hotels and has a unique demographic in that it serves both domestic and international clientele”, said Thomas Wahl.

Announcements like this occur from time to time but few ever come to fruition. Remember these? The Theme Park, The boutique hotel up high above the scarred hillside along the Libramiento, the big development of luxury "green" homes including an 18 hole golf course west of Ajijic? There have been so many. Oh, I forgot the Caraterra bypass in the hills north of Ajijic, the widening of the Caraterra in Ajijic, etc.. Sheesh.

Any idea where?

I though someone was planning on building a big hotel/casino at the top of that ugly scar of a road up the mountain?

I wish them all luck. From what I know of the occupancy figures here, it is hardly a seller's market. I don't think the expats or the Tapatio weekenders who come here are big spenders.

This ain't no PV.

And the mordidas and sobornos begin again...

I'm predicting that the project will progress far enough that some poor people will be disadvantaged and displaced, a mess will be made and never cleaned up, parties will be given in celebration, politicians from state and local levels will be offered and will accept bribes, loans will be secured, then that money will be spent elsewhere (laundered) and then, with no money for infrastructure, the "project will fail after never having gotten off the ground. All this after some genius discovers that this is not really a tourist destination in the traditional sense...it is a retirement community with some Tapatios who almost exclusively do only day trips to eat, drink, and then leave behind their refuse. That is why we have a WalMart but no chain hotels. This area could probably support a bright purple and pink "hot sheet" motel! Just kidding...really...

The Tapatios are here for Saturday nights only and the rest of the week is dead. Look at the restaurants they all stay in business solely because of the Sunday business they get from Guad. Most people from north are here for months or longer and not looking to spend that amount of time in a hotel. I dont see a large luxury hotel succeeding here.

My goodness, don't any of you remember the announcement of a "bullet train" being built from Mexico city to Guad. This was all the talk about 10 yrs. ago. I bet it is going to bring all those visitors from Mexico City to Ajijic. Really folks the stuff I smoke is for medicinal purposes only.

Mexico has taught me to ignore anything that is planned as it probably will never be started or, if started, never completed. I believe only when something is completed and functioning. How is our new airport expansion going, by the way? Remember how excited we all were about that and knew it was a "sure thing" and "done deal"? Indefinite postponement.
