Mad_Max
Based on the ambiance (a great collection of books), I don't mind the one peso charge for each class of water - and actually find it amusing. I enjoy the service and the food - and go whenever I run out of books - which is probably every 7 or 8 days. And if you don't want to pay one peso for water - don't go - or don't order water. And if you don't like his food, don't go. Seems he has enough business - and I, for one, really appreciate the effort he has made to keep up with his ever expanding selection of books. Putting away the books and keeping them in alphabetical order is on his dime. Some places only offer bottled water at 10 pesos or more. Seems like if there is enough complaining, he could do away with the 1 peso charge and just offer bottled water - and that makes no sense. Water costs him, Lets not oversimplify things by looking at how many glasses of water is in a garrafon. The water is delivered, so there is time accepting the delivery, there is a charge for the garrafon - so there is time spent making payment - the water is stored somewhere so that takes requisite floor space - ice costs him (as that is put in the glass with the water) - the server gets the glass of water with ice and takes it to your table - then he picks up the empty glass and takes it to the kitchen to be washed - then someone washes the glass and puts it away. Geez - that is all overhead to give you a glass of water. I don't mind paying the one peso at all.
julia
I often go to Jeffs with a group and he always greets us with hugs and kisses. Thats the reason why we go and he knows all our names. He has a strong business , often full even in the off season . Many restaurants at Lakeside would die to have as many clients as Cafe Magana. So he must be doing something right.
bmh
Of course the water could be included in his operating cost and he choses not to do it, his prerogative no one is forced to go there. Chosing not to frequent a restaurant because the man is charging 1 peso for water is ludicrous. In France they will offer you bottled water which is more expensive than wine and will charge you for the butter, every restaurant is entitled to its quirk and it is up to people to accept them or not. The fact that we are all talking about this non- event shows how much time everyone has to waste on useless subjects-
RVGRINGO
For some time, we've all suspected that the next major wars will be over water. It seems that they have begun.
Fred Habacht
How about the woman that came into his restaurant, while we were there, clutching a bag of chips and asked for water...and then some lemon....sure she did order something else, but if it were my place...she and the chips would be invited to eat elsewhere. Pogo
I wish that Jeffrey would allow those of us who frequent his cafe to vote on whether or not the problem children get to stay. It is always such a relief when they leave and the usual conviviality and warmth of the cafe is restored. After witnessing a few scenes like the one that sparked this thread, I think Jeffrey tries way too hard and puts up with the nonsense far too long. I notice that the OP was a first and only post, which always makes me wonder about its veracity. The above post by Mad_Max seems to be confirming there is a charge, which Mad says she doesn't mind paying. Lexy
MountainGal
My husband eats there frequently. He says there has always been a charge for water. He doesn't mind paying, either.

Mainecoons
We don't eat there (or anywhere out for that matter) very often but when I have done so, have been very satisfied with the place. Not the cheapest, not the best, but all around a very satisfactory place, at least for lunch, which is when I have eaten there. All the best of luck ASL and hurry back! lauren
Well said, Pogo! I happen to like Jeff. He has a great sense of humor but doesn't take crap off anybody. His signs don't bother me because I'm careful to follow his rules (the rules are ones I follow in my everyday life anyway). His food is consisently good. I don't eat there very often because it is a little more rich than I need. But I always enjoy my food and the experience when I do eat there! Jeff (or Geoff) has managed to stay in business for quite a few years so the guy must be doing something right.
sm1mex
I ate there and had a small thin piece of fish with a lot of batter on it I scraped off, more batter than fish and the potato salad was not good. Potatoes were big chunks, hard and mealy and it was extended with carrots and bell pepper. 71 pesos, not worth it.
Betsy
Roast beef, smashed potatos, carrot ginger soup...and iced tea. I have no idea how much it costs but THAT is an amazing meal. There is not better roast beef in this area ...or anywhere that I have ever been. Other great dishes are the coleslaw (EXCELLENT) and salads...I like the one with watermelon , feta cheese and balsamic vinegar. The shrimp and special sauces are really good too. I won't go into ribs cause that is like talking about religon. I really love the vibe of the place, it has a lot of character (hello Jeff!) and I love love love the books. Sometimes Jeff will come sit at our table and talk to us if he isn't too busy...He is a good soul. The fish is not my favourite thing on the menu, i don't like that English style batter...i think that is just a personal preferance...but my son loves it. I have had some really good choclolate mousse for dessert at Magana, but I usually don't have room... Cafe Magana is in my top
artsnob
I especially like his potatoe salad, big chunks and grainy, with lots of crisp extras added...I also get his ribs, pulled and called a revlon wrap..all the sauces are great and I change everytime I go there...The meat loaf is great too..But I especially like the books..and so well organised....and JEFF is special too... conejorapido
Oh good grief! Not again. Your petty complaints and puerile vituperations embarrass us all. If you don't like the restaurant, don't go. It is as simple as that. There are numerous choices of food and ambiance; I am sure you can find one to fit your palate. If you have no idea, try Bubba's. Hopefully, they will build a McDonalds soon and you will have a place to go and "have it your way." Exactly the right response!!

There's only one person who writes like this so here goes: I would like to say that we always enjoy coming to your place, the hospitality and the food! No matter how busy you are, you always have a kind word or quick joke for our table which is very much appreciated. We're coming back for more. I think I'll buy water for the house!
