From a friend who lives over in Ixtlahuacan:
I have such very sad news to share with everyone. Our beloved Pancho (owner of Los Cinco Potrillos) has died. His funeral will be tonight around the block from Cinco’s: Ignacio Allende #11, around 9 or 10 pm.

The restaurant will be closed for three days for mourning.

He will be buried tomorrow. A sign on the door of the restaurant will give the details.

Lupita, Pancho’s wife, wants all those people who frequented Los Cinco Potrillos to know. The restaurant will remain open in Ixtlahuacan after the period of mourning. Tere came by to let us know this morning so we could let everyone else know.

In respect, I think we should all avoid gossiping. His death had nothing to do with the challenges the Lake Chapala area has been experiencing.

Pancho was a good man, a good father and husband. And he was a good, involved citizen of Ixtlahuacan. We will miss him terribly. I can’t stop crying!

He was a lovely man. Always so friendly and accomodating. We loved eating at Cinco Potrillos. We are saddened to hear he has died so young.

OMG, I´m so shocked and saddened to read this. Los 5 Potrillos is one of my favorite places and I LOVED how good he was with his customers. The food is always tasty, fresh and so reasonably priced. He was young, too.

Is anyone taking up a collection for his family? I´d love to donate. He will be VERY sorely missed.

Such sad news his death is but I wonder why you would jump to taking up a collection for his family. They do run a successful establishment. Wouldn't that be insulting. How about sponsoring a mass or two instead.

Unfortunately it is now SHE who will run the business and it will be shut for who knows how long til Lupita can get herself and family "back together." I think taking up a collection is a very nice gesture and that the money will be put to good use until the restaurant opens again.

Oh my gosh! Was just there a few weeks ago joking with Pancho. He seemed so young and healthy, what happened?

Sola, I don´t think it´s insulting to take up a collection for the family to use as they want (flowers? a mass? whatever). It´s not meant to imply that the business is going to fail, etc, etc, but a gesture of respect for someone so many of us admired.

What a nice, nice man he was. I'm so very sad to hear this. I hope his restaurant will continue to be successful without him so his family will do well. What a shame!

I am also very saddened by the news of his death...he was always all smiles and always appreciated the business we brought him. I too am curious to what happened...he seemed very healthy but then, who ever really knows. I wish I had read this earlier and I would have gone to the service.
RIP Senior Pancho...now who am I going to tease about the dead plants?

I am so saddened to hear this. I will be back at Lakeside next week for several months and was planning on dinner at Los Cinco Potrillos very early in my visit; it's a favorite place, wonderful food, and Pancho was so gracious and welcoming and always remembered me even when I was a very new customer.

I'm saddened that he has left this planet so early and am so sad for his family. RIP, Pancho.

So very sad to hear this. Cinco Portillos is our favorite for Mexican food. I know Pancho would want us all to continue to frequent his restaurant and to support Lupita's taking over. We certainly will.

Had an appointment in Guadalajara last Friday evening. On returning, decided to stop at Cinco Portrillos and have dinner. Pancho give me his usual big hug and we chatted and laughted for a while. I am so glad I got to see him and we will miss him.
