If you shop at Wal-Mart in Ajijic, look in the frozen fish department for blanco de nilo. It's Vietnamese catfish, no muddy or musky taste, and it's absolutely delicious. Cheap, too. I dust it with flour and sauté it in a mix of olive oil and butter. Mmmm...

Thanks for the tip on Walmart: Better to eat at home with friends and be happy afterwards.

The gumbo is really good, just salty. It's my favorite.

"The gumbo is really good, just salty"??? Makes no sense at all. We had the crab cakes and they really were bad. I guess the gringos need some place to spend their money. Never be afraid of the street food. You can get sick ANYWHERE!!!! Remember that.

blanco del nilo is a type of tilapia not catfish and a big Chinese export. Blanco del nilo is a white fis without a strong flavor.

It is Basa in the frozen section of Walmart....Basa is a type of catfish from the Mekong area which is common in Vietnam. I hate it...and don't care how it's prepared...I remember many many times having to eat it out of courtesy in VN and just the idea of it was and is yucky. I'm sure many of you who have been to Vietnam have visited one of the myriad floating catfish farms in the delta.

In Nayarit the basa is sold as "Supremo". In the Ajijic tianguis at least one vendor sells it as "Chilean Sea Bass" .

We tried this restaurant for the first time last week. My companion ordered the tilapia and I had their Afro-Indian rib-eye burger (or something like that). The tilapia was a very small portion and the fries were obviously reheated, tough and dried out, also very heavily seasoned. My burger was mediocre and inferior to most I've had elsewhere at Lakeside. We discussed the meal afterwards and concluded it was overpriced and we will probably not return, unless maybe it is to try their gumbo. My mother was Cajun and once owned/ran a restaurant. I do love (and know) good gumbo, but it sounds like we would be better off making our own at home. Hopefully the owner/chef will read and respond to some of the feedback here, which actually gives all area restaurant owners some excellent and very valuable input.

I ate at Gossip's tonight and the chili was to die for! Ismat (the chef from Kenya) won the Chili Cookoff a year ago and it defintely shows. His curry is also exceptional. And if you like New Orleans food --try his gumbo. Drop by on Tuesday for a real "New Orleans" Fat Tuesday fix. I love the place and will make it a regular stop.

May I ask if tonight was your first time, what makes you recommend "real New Orleans Fat Tuesday" there.

We live up the street from Gossip's and walk there regularly for a cup of gumbo or curry when we don't want to cook. He had a special last night of a bowl of chili and a beer for 90 pesos. The chili was awesome! Every Tuesday he plays New Orleans music and has "specials"on the menu. I have tried these a couple of times and enjoyed them. Have you been there before?

If you like catfish, you can buy frozen filets at Costco that are outstanding. Fresh tasting, not fishy, musky, muddy, or anything else negative. We serve them to guests all the time either blackened, breaded and fried, poached, baked with a lemon butter dill sauce, etc. Absolutely delicious.

We also just returned from a month in the US where I ate fried or blackened catfish several times. Not once did the fish have a muddy or musky flavor and that is the difference between something fresh and a fish that is past its prime.

Do you know where the catfish from Costco is from? We had a friend bring us a bag of frozen talapia from Costco and when we saw it was from China, we threw it out. Horrible, filthy conditions in raising and packaging fish from China. We have lived on the Alabama coast and used to love the catfish. Not fish, musky or muddy either. Just terrific. My husband likes the "all-you-can-eat" catfish from Bubba's, but don't know where it is from.

No, I've never actually eaten there, which is why I was curious about Fat Tuesday. 'Cause I have eaten in New Orleans, and every place I tried I loved (admittedly a smitten tourist). So any source for good gumbo or etouffee or jambalaya works for me.

My husband and I just got back from lunch at Gossup's and we have eaten there many times. I guess it just depends on the person because we have never had a bad experience. As far as the portions, I had one of their specials today ... a chicken burrito that was more than ample and full of tender chicken. My husband had a shrimp dish and, again, it was almost more than he could eat. We were going to have the bread pudding (which I have been wanting ever since they opened) but was too full to eat it. Is the problem with the portions that there isn't enough to get full on twice? Half at the restaurant and half at home? Anyway, if you have not been there, please don't let all this negative reporting keep you from going ... you might like it as much as we do. We would sure like to see them stay in business.
