PERFORMING ARTS
By Irma Ashley
Summertime and LLT
This summer marks the completion of the new rehearsal studio. In the past,
when two plays were in stages of production, only one had access to the stage, while the
second cast and crew were forced onto the theatre patio or a private residence during the crucial
blocking of early rehearsals.
Often what works off-stage needs to be reworked onstage....
a frustrating and time consuming problem, especially with the expanded season of back to back
plays and the more technically demanding productions that come with the musicals.
Standing ovations have been earned by the construction crew, fund raisers,
and the many generous donors who continue to help create the magic of live community
theatre. Additional contributions are still needed. The rehearsal studio will bear the name of
the largest individual donor.
The Play Reading Committee has read and reviewed potential plays and
musicals. Directors will present their plays to the Board this month and the selections for the
coming season will be announced by the Board in late summer. So ... whatever did happen to those
lazy hazy days?
A Night of Jazz and Swing at the Auditorio
Like to tap your feet and listen to jazz and swing music? Thirteen Northern
Europeans will bring their successful tour of Europe across the waters to this
continent. The one night performance will take place in the Auditorio in La Floresta to benefit the
Huicol Indians. The Humane Society will tun the bar and pocket a percentage and the remainder
will go to the able performers. The jazz and swing concert will take place sometime in the
middle of july .... watch for it.
Around the Town
lf you didn't catch MAYCOL, a gifted entertainer who played at the New
Posada for five days last month, you really missed a talent that could sing and make the keyboard
talk. Marion Herring and Barbara McWilliams can attest to that. Mary Andrews and Dick and Lois Hanna liked
him so much they saw him twice.
The Piano Bar above the Gringo Grill was standing room only. Cindy Paul, a
versatile singer doing songs we all know was accompanied on the piano by Jose Ibarra. When Cindy
took a break, Shirley Haverland, a stand up comedienne strutted her stuff and had everyone in
stiches.
The entire membership of the Lakeside Garden Guild was invited to a private
home in Guadaljara to attend a 50th anniversay luncheon hosted by the Guadaljara Garden Club.
For the celebration, everyone was asked to wear Mexican attire.
On July 21st, the members of the Lake Chapala Garden Club will stroll thru
the beautiful garden at the home of Jim and Dorothy Hust. After the tour, Bobbie Chandler will
demonstrate how to make an outstanding floral design with a minimal amount of flowers. The club,
interacting with public officials has also embarked on a program to Save the Trees of La Floresta. This
ambitious program should be supported by everyone. Not only are the trees a graceful landmarkā but they
scrub the air of impurities, hold down the temperature and keep the earth in place.
Ron McDonald aka The General, threw a surprise birthday party for his wife, Anna May. Over sixty

Your read it here first: Don't be surprised to pick up a best seller
and find the author is our own David Lyons. He read a short part of a chapter of a book he is writing to a
small writer's group. You could
have heard a pin drop on a carpet floor. His first book is with an agent in
New York who was a former
editor and David is presently in the process of doing some rewriting the
agent suggested to make the book
more saleable to a publisher.
