Jalisco's Leading
English Language Publication
|
 |
|
 |
| Now considered the top English-language
monthly in Mexico, the publication was founded in 1985,
as an adjunct to its parent company, Chapala Realty. Its
founder and publisher, Richard Tingen, is an old Lakeside
hand, having first come to Mexico in the seventies.
Today, the business end of the newspaper is handled
by his son, David, a recent graduate of the University
of Guadalajara. David holds a degree in Business Administration,
and under his stewardship, El Ojo del Lago has greatly
increased its number of subscriptions, as well as the
amount of advertising. The advertising department is
headed by Shelly Burger Canales, who has lived in Mexico
for more than ten years. The newspaper´s editorial staff
of eight people includes Jim Tuck, who has published
almost 900 magazine articles, as well as having written
six major books of non-fiction. The editor of the paper
is Alejandro Grattan-Dominguez, who prior to coming
to Mexico was a director/writer in the American film
industry. In 1995, he published his first novel. His
second book came out in late 1997. Over the past few
years, the newspaper has grown from 28 to 64 pages,
and has run almost a thousand articles, profiles and
poems--most of which had to do with Mexico or were Hispanic-related.
The corps of our contributors has also grown greatly,
with many of our writers sending in material from other
parts of Mexico, as well as from as far away as Switzerland.
Today, El Ojo del Lago is something of an institution,
and as the Lakeside´s population continues to climb,
we hope the paper grows with it, both in terms of quantity
as well as quality.
