AROUND THE TOWN

John and Alice Hathaway celebrated the big 50. Anniversary that is. Children and grandchildren from all parts of the US flew in to join in the festivities. Relatives and friends, like Margaret Drewry, Gladys Crandall and Billie Erickson dined on fondue at Los Suizos Restaurant courtesy of John and Alice.

Another anniversary party for three years of wedded bliss was held in the home of Charlotte and Read Vawter. On hand were the Hamilton's. Hamilton, a minister performed the ceremony that united Read and Charlotte. A "pleasing to the palate" buffet was in place, the guests danced to live music of oldies, but goodies and the rain stayed away.

The classy Bunnell residence was a perfect setting for a small, late afternoon cocktail party. About twenty people were invited to this one to view the plans for the new animal shelter. Land has been donated far enough away so people will not be disturbed by the noises of exuberant animals. Several other small cocktail parties are scheduled to acquaint people with the facility. The plans show a central building with wheel-like spokes to house the animals. Of particular interest is the run designed for the felines. A portion will be left in its natural state so the cats have some relief from being on a hard surface. The subject of the rights of animals has turned as volatile and touchy as politics and religion. The "for it" and the "agin it" seem unable to find any common meeting ground. Unfortunately, the animals have no say.

The community was shocked and saddened when Bananas burned. Not only was it a place of entertainment, but also it had become a place where charity events were held because the owner, Dixie Anselmo was co-operative and generous with the space the club provided. Last month, the community responded in force. The crowd eagerly paid their twenty-peso cover charge and brought food for the biggest potluck this town has seen. In return they had door prizes up the kazoo and music. True, the instruments were on loan, but the noisy crowd danced (upright or toe-tapped) and in general had a good time. Hopefully, this event was just the prescription to help the patient on the road to recovery. Bobbie Chandler and Philip Nowell provided a convivial afternoon for eight people in the form of a light-hearted bridge game followed by a superb dinner. It was obvious Bobbie is a member of the Culinary Society. Helane and Layne Carver had a party. The theme was "Rhapsody in Blue." Guests were decked out in shades of blue and everywhere you looked there was a blue hue. Loretto Clay returned from Pennsylvania for her sojourn in Ajijic. Loretto usually drives, but discovered flying is much like liquor; it's quicker.

Ann Lewis, a recent newcomer is already involved in several projects. Her interests are varied and her energy seems boundless. She had gone on the same Amazon trip as the editor. Her trip came six years earlier when Beder, the guide was brand new at the game. All told, Ann has visited over fifty countries and she said her trip to the Amazon was still one of her favorites. Gene Beck seen enjoying her daughter when she and her husband visited from Austin. Taking the plunge; to move here permanently, are Donna and Mal (Malcolm) McElroy and Jack and Ruth McDonald and the Jack Normans.
