Water Ruffled by the Wind

     Coba, in Quintana Roo, was never exactly a “lost” city but it seems to have been repeatedly misplaced. Though it was mentioned by John Lloyd Stephens in 1841 and actually visited and photographed by Teobert Maler in 1893, it did not actually come to the attention of scholars until Dr. Thomas Gann was shown the site by the Maya in 1926. His glowing report prompted the Carnegie Institute to send an exploratory group led by J. Eric S. Thompson. His initial report of the surprisingly large site encouraged his superior, Sylvanus Morley, to make a more thorough study. Thompson was apparently so intrigued by the site he returned several times to excavate and even took his bride there for their honeymoon.
