The Regional Museum of Guadalajara
by Mildred Boyd

It is fitting that Guadalajara’s Regional Museum should be housed in a splendid, museum-class example of Colonial architecture. The structure, a treasure in its own right, covers a full city block. It is fronted by a lovely open plaza, containing only the Rotunda of the Illustrious Men. This is a circular monument of seventeen classic columns that is actually a mausoleum for Guadalajara’s 98 most famous sons (and one lone daughter). It is surrounded by bronze statues, including poets, composers, authors and historians in addition to military heroes. From here the entire, impressive sweep of the Museum’s Mexican Viceregal style facade is visible.
