Creative Lakeside
Writing a novel, revising it and getting it published are acts
akin to climbing Mt. Everest
or at least El Capitán, where
I believe they have big grizzlies enhancing the toil and danger.
Two booksigning parties were celebrated
in August, one by El Ojo del Lago's ex-columnist Irma Ashley for her
novel, Beat the Drums for Tomorrow, and the other by our own editor
Alejandro Grattan-Domínguez for his novel, Only Once in a Lifetime.
Though it carries the title of Grattan's
motion picture, this book, (Grattan's third), is a much fuller depiction,
lively and colorful in his reader-friendly style.
Congratulations are indeed in order.
With the
energy of youth, The Houston Childrens Choir performed a gruelling schedule
during their short stay at Lakeside. At their St. Andrew's concert they
sang, among other beautiful numbers, "Lord of the Dance" and
"The Lord's Prayer," which continues to haunt me at this writing
much later. There is nothing like music, nothing else like sacred music,
and brighter still is sacred music performed well by the pure voices
of children.
