Us Flag Day

It is a hide-bound tradition in every country that their flag never touch the ground. The US extends this tradition to include destroying their worn out flags by setting them afire, then putting the ashes in a special container and burying them in secret. June 14 the Chapala American Legion Post 7 held a burning flag ceremony, then enjoyed dinner and dancing to the country music band put together by Quinn Hamlin, lead guitar and singer, “Vincente,” who surprised everyone by pulling off a couple of well performed vocals, and Quinn’s neighbors “Alfredo” and “Chuy,” two young Mexican guitar players. Quinn had practiced with the two young men—who are accomplished guitar players, but with no professional experience—for two weeks before the event and they learned their lessons well. This group was as good as any organized country band in town, playing everything from American pop and country to danceable tunes with a Latin beat. If the measure of a successful evening is how much audiences are moved to get up and dance, this first gig for Quinn and his gang was a huge success.
