Walking the Walk

     * ERIC, the Lakeside Education Fund (Educacion Para la Ribera de Chapala A.C.), served up “mangoritas” for their lucky guests at a party/presentation last month. Volunteers who work on scholarships and school improvements were on hand to tell their poignant experiences at the home of Trudie and Stewart McCowan. To learn more about this worthwhile charity, (education is the future!), call Donna Carnall, 766-2520, or e-mail carnall@laguna.com.mx.

     * Wendee Hill from ACA sends along this tip on how to make a natural organic insecticide spray for your garden. Just make sure you follow the directions or you’ll burn up a bunch of nice produce like they did!
Organic Insecticide: 1/2 kilo of Cayenne pepper, 1/2 kilo of unpeeled garlic , sunlight soap, blend at high speed. The special recipe gets diluted in 5 gallons of water. Let the mixture sit in the sun for a day, then strain; the liquid is used as a natural spray insecticide. To spray is just that, not a forceful blast into the center of each plant at close range! Walk as you spray, leaving a soft mist of this powerful natural insecticide to eliminate thrips and other pesky insects.
You can now find ACA organic produce at the following locations: El Torito’s, MWF; LCS and Chapala American Legion on Tues.; Tianguis Ajijic Market, Wed.; Saturday in Guadalajara at  2367-A Mexicaltzingo, Mondays-Saturdays at GGs’s Country Store in Jaltepec.
ACA organically grows these specialty items, among others: Borage, sweet potatoes, Chop Suey greens, Pok Choi cabbage, and yellow zucchini. For info call the Farm at 01-387-763-1850 or check out ACA Web pages www.peoplesguide.com/aca.
