A DOG'S VIEW OF
THE HUMANE SOCIETY
My name is Pluma and I'm a black dog of unknown ancestry. I have a little sister named Pinta whose ancestry is even more suspect. Actually, we're both just a couple of mutts but we live wonderful lives with masters that love us very much. One day recently we both ate grass that had been treated with insecticide the day before and we became terribly sick. Our master, whom we call Dad, realized immediately that we were in danger and raced us to the car in search of the nearest veterinarian. He was so nervous as he was certain that we could die without medical attention. There is no vet in our little village and he was unable to locate one in Chapala. Fortunately, the time was just approaching 9: 00 a.m. and he knew the Humane Society would be open so he hurried there. Boy, were we lucky! Drs. Adan Gutierrez and Tony Sikes were there and they quickly administered the proper medicines intravenously. At this point, I don't remember rnuch, but the last thing I heard was Dr. Gutierrez telling Dad that he wasn't sure we would make it but he would do everything he could to try to save us. The doctor didn't want us moved for the day and as the Humane Society closes at 1: 00 p.m. ,that presented a problem. Not for long, though. Lovely Katie Lawrence offered to return to the Society at 5:00 p.m. to allow Dad to pick us up. Ms. Lawrence and her helpers even cleaned Pinta and me all up as we were quite messy from being so sick. When Dad returned for us, we were both awake and feeling soooo much better. After our pen door was opened, I jumped up and gave my dad such a big hug. It was a most special feeling. You see, the very first time I ever saw my dad was when I was a baby and a pen door was opened at the Humane Society and I reached up and gave him a big hug and kiss. Was it ever a lucky day for me as he adopted me from the Society and gave me a great home with lots of love and other dogs and cats to play with. Pinta and I want to thank the wonderful folks that took care of us that day. If it were not for the experience and
to write this letter to thank them so very much and to tell everyone how very lucky we are to have such a great facility in our neighborhood. Pinta and I would like to ask that all Lakeside animal lovers support this most humane society whether it is by offering your time, financial support, or adopting a pet. We bet there's a puppy or kitten who would love to give you a big hug and kiss.
