There were Super Bowl parties all over town. As usual, the Loridans, Sandra and Henri, had their annual big blaze of a bash complete with the Jerry Mayfield band and red beans and rice and wonder of wonders, there were no tickets sold to benefit anything. The only reason for its existence was for everyone to have a good time. Mary Andrews, an original from Tennessee in her cheer leaders outfit, led the rooting section for the Titans, but whoever you were cheering for; it was a good game with the outcome uncertain until the clock ran out.
The dinner dance tickets for Hands Around the Lake went rapidly and there was a big crowd. Over 500 hundred pieces of jewellery were on display for lucky buyers to pick through. Close to one hundred thousand pesos is expected to be handed over to Aurora Michel, a prominent member of The Lake Chapala Basin Commission. The funds are specifically earmarked for the “Hands -Around the Lake” event scheduled for June 3rd. In the past several funded events have been started to save the lake and have been met with apathy, the money frittered away , so perhaps a large investment in publicity might bring an outside source with a deep pocket beating on the door. The lake is a natural resource that has been used and abused and the problems are many beginning with a burgeoning population in Guadalajara that gets much of its water from the lake. It makes sense that Guadalajara should be enclosing some of those deep gorges to capture the rain water and draw from that natural supply during the year. Not to mention that the main river which feeds the lake runs thru several states, all of which have specific needs from the river and divert it for their use. Pollutants….well, that’s a whole new can of worms.
Three couples gave a dinner dance at the Chapala Country Club in Vista Del Lago. The music was spirited, the dance floor filled and the food and drink plentiful. The large crowd had a great time judging by the flow of conversation and the noise level.
Eldon and Barbara Adams are back in town. She is looking slim and trim as she always does. And what a smile she has.
The memorial for Jane Osburn took place in her lovely gardens. Many friends and relatives were there to pay tribute to a great lady.
Eddie Sommers, suffering for years from emphysema, contracted double pneumonia and slipped away from this earth in late January. About sixty people gathered at the Little Chapel to pay their respects to him and to his family. After the service, people were chauffeured up the steep hill by Larry Russell and Tony Dare to the home of Judy McDonald where a reception was held.
