The School for the Deaf is getting some financial relief since the state agreed to pay the teacher’s salaries. That doesn’t mean they don’t need help. Hearing aids must still be bought and repaired, taxes paid, live-in students fed, the facility maintained by a full time employee and insurance premiums met. One way of raising funds is by the popular house tours that occur every Thursday. And now, new and exciting is the self-help program led by Leeta Jordan. The students are learning to create original greeting cards and wrapping paper. Their wares should be available for the next holiday season.
It’s early, but judging by the success of the Ajijic Festival Internacional de Cine, you should fast forward to November and mark November 8-12th on the calendar for that is the dates set by the board for the second AFIC. Jim Lloyd, president said they expect to double last year’s submission and expand opportunities for filmmakers to meet with distributors and studio production executives from around the world. All entries should be submitted for viewing by July 15th for initial consideration.
It happened. There was no fanfare or hoopla, but the Department of Tourism sponsored a course in hygiene that was available to all food handlers. Several Lakesiders may have read the laudatory letter written to the Colony Reporter by Philip Nowell thanking Bobbi Chandler for getting the ball rolling.
Nobody means to do it, but in our busy lives we sometimes tend to overlook things, so if you have discovered an over-due library book hiding under a pile of newspapers or in a dark corner, this month is the time to return it for the enjoyment of others with no fine and no questions asked.
