Because the Christmas Show put on by the Garden Guild was so successful and drew so many people, the Guild has decided to do another holiday show this year, probably with extended viewing after the opening. No doubt the flower and plant show will be as beautiful and innovative as it was last December.
The February meeting of the Garden Guild was held in the home of Ann Rowell and the members threw a multitude of questions at Gordon Smart, who talked about using fertilizers purchased here and containing garden pests also with products available here. His talk was so informative that the group asked if he would be willing to return again after they had taken his advice. Hís wife, Laurie, a member of the Guild and the Garden Club, is an expert on plants. Her speciality is the care and propagation of roses. Both Laurie and Gordon are generous with their time to help other gardeners who do not have the same expertise as this duo.
The death of Todd (Rocky) Karns was mentioned in People Magazine. His role of Harry Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life” was noted. The toast Harry gave his big movie brother, George, (Jimmy Stewart) was mentioned as having been memorably given. Rocky’s passing was also mentioned on CNN. (Ed. Note: Unlike so many others here at Lakeside, Rocky rarely if ever boasted about his former achievements. But as the above eloquently confirms, he was a man of considerable and varied talent.)
Suzie and Jay Lotven, former Peace Corps workers in Belize found they had kindred souls who had done the same kind of work. They held a luncheon in their home for several other Corps workers who have drifted to Mexico to retire. There are about 15 people in the area who served with the Peace Corps at one time or another. Suzie was a teacher, but stated that she learned a lot more from the peasants than she taught them. They lived on the same standard as the villagers. They quickly learned to do without running water, capturing their water when it rained from a tank on top of the roof. Since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, many once communist dominated countries are receiving volunteers. Volunteers teach health care, English as a second language, assist small businesses and provided more sophisticated help as the technical world expands. The plans are to meet monthly. For more information, you can call 01 376 35446. Once a teacher, always a teacher, Suzie is the new Director of Education at the Wilkes Center.
A select number of invitations to attend an auction on April 5 of more than 200 pieces were delivered to some lucky Lakesiders. Gabriel Noboa, who is famous for his ceramic art and paintings on pottery was born in Ecuador. In 1964, he came here from New York, having made a name for himself in the art world.
While in New York, Lucien Picud and Pierre Cardín commissioned him to do designs. All of the works in the auction are collectors’ items and no two pieces are alike. Invitees will be whisked to Guadalajara by limousine and deposited at the Devoncroft Restaurant in Guadalajara where they will dine and have what the Huichol Indians call “a good evening.” The majority of the proceeds will go to establish a place for the Indian tribes of Mexico to achieve better health.
The byword is BE AWARE of your surroundings when walking in unpopulated areas. Incidents of purse snatching have been reported. Crime is an unfortunate fact of life, but simple precautions can make you a less likely target. Don’t carry large amounts of cash. Leave your credit cards and important papers in a safe place. Change your routine. The smaller the bag, the less likely you are to be a victim. Never leave your purse or wallet or other valuables in plain view in your car. Chances are they won’t be there when you return. In a letter received from Seattle, a young lady said she was going to invest in a burglar alarm since her roommate’s car had been stolen, her landlady had her car broken into and someone had entered an apartment three blocks from her while the occupant was asleep. Seattle is considered one of the best big cities to live in.
